Eat Your High pt 5: Infusions vs Distillate
So, you’ve checked out our micro-series, Eat Your High, and are wanting to make infused edibles at home, right? Well, then let’s discuss how to calculate the cannabinoid content of your goodies! We’re far from green behind the ears and can lend a how-to hand on calculating an approximate MG content of your infused snack. We’re going to break down the two most common types of homebrew edible infusions: oil (or butter) and distillate. To calculate the average MG of each edible, the formula’s going to vary a little between the two. If you’re working with cannabis flower infusions, then you’re going to want to have the THC % handy, and the amount (grams) of flower you used to infuse your oil. (If you’re unsure, 10% is an average guesstimate!) from there, you’ll want to convert your grams to milligrams then multiply that number by your THC %! To calculate the average MG per piece in your batch, take your milligram number and divide it by the number of pieces! If you’re utilizing distillate, make sure you take that volume (in grams) and convert it to milligrams! Since distillate is usually 95% pure, all you’ll need to do is multiply your MG number by the THC %. Divide that number by however many pieces you intend to portion out, and voila!
Mapping out the Math
Infused Butter/Oils:
- Calculate the cannabinoid percentage of your flower!
- 10% is a good average to start if you’re unsure of your flower’s THC content! (If you have this info handy, make sure to input that number into your formula!) 1 gram of flower = 10% THC
- Convert grams to milligrams.
- Remember how many grams of flower you used to infuse your oil? Great! Let’s take that number and multiply it by 1,000 to convert to MG. (30 grams x 1,000 = 3,000 milligrams)
- Multiply MG’s by THC %.
- This info’s gunna give you a baseline on how many MG’s your entire batch is! (1000 x 0.30 MG’s = 300 MG’s)
- Divide MG’s by # of pieces.
- How many brownies are you gunna make? 12, 24? Once you know, take the MG’s per batch and divide it by the number of pieces you plan to crank out! (300/12 = 25% per piece)
Distillate:
- Convert grams to milligrams.
- Distillate’s volume is typically measured in grams, so let’s multiply that by 1,000 to convert to milligrams! (1,000 x 0.30 grams = 300 MG’s)
- Multiply your MG’s by your THC %.
- Most distillate is 95% pure, so that’s the number we’re going to work with! Feel free to supplement with your own. (300 MG’s x 0.95 = 285 MG’s)
- Calculate your MG (per piece)
- Divide your MG’s by the number of pieces you plan to make! (285/12 = 23.75%)
