Eat Your High pt 5: Infusions vs Distillate
So, you’ve checked out our micro-series, Eat Your High, and are wanting to make infused edibles at home, ey?
Well then, we need to discuss how to calculate the cannabinoid content of your goodies! We’re far from green behind the ears – we’ll lend ya a how-to hand on calculating an approximate MG content of your infused snack.
Depending on your preference of cannabinoid, (THC, CBD, etc…) you’re able to get an approximate baseline for THC % in your flower before infusion. THC content will fluctuate, but on average you can expect roughly 10% of THC per gram.
Infused Oil/Butter:
- Calculate the Cannabinoid Percentage of Your Flower!
If you happen to know the exact % of cannabinoid your particular strain has, feel free to input that information in place of our 10%!
1 Gram of Cannabis = 10% THC Content
- Convert Grams to Milligrams!
Next, you’ll want to calculate how many grams of flower you used to make your infused butter/oil. We’re going to populate a figure here and say we used 5 grams of flower to make our infusion! We’re going to want to multiply that by 1,000 to convert it to milligrams! (this will be super helpful later on)
5 Grams of Flower x 1000 = 5,000 MG’s
- Multiply MG’s by THC Percentage:
Then we multiply our 5,000 MG’s of flower by the THC percentage! This is how we’re going to calculate an estimate of many MG’s the entire batch is, and from there we’ll create a chart based on individualized portions.
5,000 MG x 0.10 = 500 MG’s per batch
- Calculate your MG (per piece)
500 MG/12 pc (500 /12) = 42 %
500 MG/24 pc (500 /24) = 21 %
Quick Recap:
So, to recap that process: first things first, you’ve got to calculate the cannabinoid content of your flower! If you don’t have this information readily available, a good average to start is 10%. Once you’ve obtained this info, then you need to take however many grams of flower you used to infuse your butter/oil and multiply it by 1,000 to convert to milligrams. Lastly you just multiply the MG’s by the cannabinoid %, then divide that number by portion size to determine the est MG per piece!
Distillate:
- Calculate the MG Content of Your Distillate
First you need to calculate the volume of your distillate! For example purposes, we’re going to be converting 30 grams of distillate into milligrams for easier calculation!
1,000 x 0.30 grams of distillate = 300 MG’s
- Divide the Volume (now having converted to MG’s) by Your Cannabinoid Percentage!
300 MG’s x 0.89 % = 267 MG (per batch)
- Calculate Your MG (per piece)
267 MG/ 12 pc= 22 %
267 MG/ 24 pc= 11%
Quick Recap:
If your distillate is measured in grams, we need to convert it to milligrams for easier calculations! You do this by multiplying the # of grams by 1,000. Next we’re going to divide that number by the cannabinoid % of our distillate. From there it’s super simple to divide by portion size and voila!
