It looks like the Senate’s going green, Campers!
On Thursday, July 21st 2022, Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer introduced a bill that would combine efforts in criminal justice reform with the federal decriminalization of marijuana – this is exciting news for our industry! This bill also extends states’ authority to set their own laws in relation to marijuana, without punitive measures from Washington. Presently, there are 19 states that legalized marijuana for recreational use. 37 states have budding medical marijuana programs that allow patients access for treatment. 72% of the country agrees – it’s time to end prohibition of marijuana.
This bill addresses concerns from both sides of the fence. It would effectively expunge all federal, criminal records in relation to marijuana, and would extend federal funding to law enforcement agencies to ensure the regulation of illegal cannabis activities. It also restricts advertisements on all cannabis-related products to minors.
In terms of social equity, the bill would extend grant opportunities to small business owners that have been disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition. Lastly, the federal Department of Transportation would be tasked with forming and regulating national policy for cannabis-impared driving.
